About Us Vision and Mission Our vision is that of a department which is recognized nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching. Our mission is to produce significant research, to provide high quality undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of study which attract the best students, and to attend to the mathematical needs of the University and the community. Our vision and mission derive their strength from a congenial and stimulating environment for research and learning. General Information Welcome to the Department of Mathematics. The world of modern mathematics is rich with vivid images and provocative ideas. Mathematics is always changing. Resulting from the enormous growth in technology and computing power, mathematics has increased its contribution to applications through mathematical experiments and modeling. One application that some of our faculty members are involved is the Virtual Cell Project. The aim of this project, carried out in collaboration with the UConn Health Center, is to develop a computational tool for the study of cellular physiological processes. We have excellent Faculty and Postdoctoral Fellows who combine considerable expertise in many fields across Pure and Applied Mathematics, Probability, Computational Mathematics, and the Actuarial Sciences. We are working hard to keep up to date all levels of our courses and degree programs. To this end our department is engaged in a pilot project to renew and improve its undergraduate programs. Our graduate program continues to have very strong recruiting and we now count 135 students pursuing graduate degrees in the various programs of our department. If you are a prospective student, we would be delighted to describe in detail the many advantages of graduate and undergraduate education in Mathematics at the University of Connecticut. We are proud of our instructional staff, which includes two University Teaching Fellows and others with significant national and institutional teaching awards. Our projects, such as the Virtual Cell, allow both graduates and undergraduates to participate. Specialty programs in Actuarial Science and Applied Mathematics include internships that provide practical experience along with generous financial support. Additional programs are being developed in Mathematical Finance and Mathematics Education. Our Graduate Assistant financial aid packages are among the most generous in the country Our undergraduates receive almost $80,000 a year in scholarships, primarily in Actuarial Science. We would appreciate hearing from you and having you participate in the exciting life of our department. |
